Proofreading or Copyediting?

In a publishing workflow, copyediting takes place before proofreading.

The term “proofreading” means different things to different people. Instead of going too far down the rabbit hole and worrying too much about what it is called, what really matters is what your organisation needs.

Quite simply, if you have a “raw”, unedited draft that you want to get ready for publication, it is a copyedit that you need. If your polished document needs a final check before publication, it is a proofread that you need.

How much does it cost?

Our quotations are based on a word count, so you will know how much you will have to pay. Please note that we have a minimum fee policy, which is £10.

Please note that we charge for sample edits, but if you then decide to use our proofreading/copyediting service, that fee will be taken off the final price.

We might ask you to pay a deposit, of which amount will be deducted from the final invoice, which we will send you once the proofreading project has been completed. If you wish to, you may spread the costs for your own budgeting needs by paying in instalments.

Is it okay if our company doesn’t have a house style?

We can work according to any existing style guide or we can create one for your business or organisation, as we have done for university departments and NGOs in the past.

If there is no specified stylistic preference, we will then adhere to British English spelling (e.g., colour instead of color) and use the “-is-” infix (e.g., organisation rather than organization).

Along with the marked-up document, you will receive a style sheet outlining the editorial decisions we have made. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss your organisation’s requirements.

How can we pay?

At the moment, we only accept UK local bank transfer, PayPal, Wise (formerly known as TransferWise) or overseas bank remittance.
