Hello, my name is…

Ed

I am a professional English and Chinese translator, proofreader, copyeditor, and copywriter, born and raised in Hong Kong before also calling a vibrant riverside city in the UK home.

My experience

In the years before I founded AngloCanto, I had proofread and copyedited undergraduate and postgraduate essay papers and dissertations, PhD theses, journal articles, and academic book chapters.

Additionally, I had copyedited and translated numerous types of corporate communication, public relations, and marketing materials, ranging from handbooks and theatre programmes to websites and annual reports. You can check out what kind of work I have done on the portfolio page.

My education

The academic training that I have undertaken covers the fields of business, modern languages, and applied linguistics.

I completed my bachelor’s degree at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where I read Marketing and Management of International Business and minored in Spanish and French. I also spent a year in Barcelona as an exchange student at Universitat Pompeu Fabra, during which I went for translation and linguistics courses instead.

After finishing my undergraduate degree, I went to University College London (UCL) Institute of Education (IOE) to study an MA in Applied Linguistics, and graduated with a distinction. During that year, I also volunteered at Stonewall on a weekly basis.

My experience growing up in the metropolitan Hong Kong, my strong and varied educational background, and my active engagement with foreign cultures have enabled me to develop an awareness of intercultural adaptation and cross-cultural communication.

My qualification

I am a qualified member of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) and I have been awarded the title of Chartered Linguist. My membership and chartered status are a reflection of my linguistic and intercultural competence, as well as my continuing commitment to professional development.

Throughout my career, I have been offering English–Chinese language services to support students, academics, and independent non-fiction writers based in the UK, China, and Hong Kong. I have also established a close working relationship with university offices, youth groups, SMEs, charities / NGOs, and multinational corporations.

My approach

For translation, I take the time to understand your message and idea, and to do adequate research, making sure that your story and values can be conveyed accurately and naturally to your target audience.

For editing, my aim is to give your craft the time it requires to improve as much as possible. I believe in the power of the natural style of your writing and my duty is to make helpful edits and let your words flow and sing.
